Glacier National Park Winter Update
What to Expect This Season in the Park

As per usual, you can expect a wonderland of wintry forests, sweeping meadows blanketed in snow and the beauty and awe of winter’s tranquility. There is no shortage of ways to experience the magic of the season in Glacier National Park.

As you recreate in the park this winter, however, please be aware of the following: The Going-to-the-Sun Road is completely closed on the west side after Apgar due to construction. That means there is NO snowshoe/Nordic skiing access on the west side of the road this winter. Please travel safely and recreate responsibly by adhering to road closure signage. Visitors may park at the Apgar Visitor Center and choose their adventure from there or recreate from the east side of the park.

Outside the park, the surrounding areas offer a winter wonderland for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding and sleigh rides.

As always, please plan ahead, play it safe and recreate responsibly and always be prepared for the winter elements.

Snowmobiling a
Sledder’s Paradise

Powering through winter in Western Montana is easy with endless, snow-covered terrain. Sled miles of steep climbs and flat trails, acres of backcountry playgrounds, and logging and forest service roads closed to vehicles this time of year. Consider a guided snowmobile tour and remember to keep avalanche safety top of mind when you're headed into the deep stuff. Carry avalanche safety gear, know the red flags of an unstable snowpack, check the avalanche forecast, and get educated in avalanche safety. For snowmobiling inspiration, visit Glaciers to Geysers. For resident and nonresident snowmobile permits, find information here.

What’s New in
Downhill Skiing

As if the skiing in Western Montana could get any better, we’ve got some exciting updates for the 2022/2023 season. For instance, there’s a new triple chairlift at Montana Snowbowl, and it’s one of the steepest in the country, boasting a 1,700-foot vertical. Lookout Pass has a new Eagle Peak expansion, offering 500 more acres, 14 new trails, incredible new glade terrain , and the new Eagle Peak Quad Chairlift that will take skiers to the summit of Eagle Peak. At Whitefish Mountain Resort, the new six-pack chair lift—Snow Ghost Express—will help with congestion and offer more chairlift access to the front side and terrain off the East Rim and Chair 5.
