Glacier National Park Travel Updates
What to Expect During the Phased Reopening
National Parks are especially popular right now in light of COVID-19, and Western Montana’s Glacier National Park is no exception. If you’re thinking about visiting, it’s important to know what to expect. Please plan ahead and travel responsibly. That means getting up-to-date, accurate travel information from reliable sources, and following the park’s COVID-19 Reopening Plan. Monitor the evolving situation and be prepared to adjust your plans as necessary. Stay safe, be respectful, be kind, be patient, and be prepared.
While the east side of the park remains closed, the west side is open, with restrictions; services—as well as road and trail access for vehicles, hikers and bikers—in and around the park’s west side may be limited. The Going-to-the-Sun Road is open from West Glacier to Avalanche and the campground is available for day-use parking, but the details continue to evolve. Check the GTTSR status here. Hikers and bikers should also check trail and road info before they head out.
Red Bus Tours are suspended for the season and park shuttles may also not resume operation this season. Overnighting in the park has opened at Village Inn and Lake McDonald Lodge, and additional lodging options can be found in communities surrounding the park. Summer lodging fills up quickly so plan ahead.
The U.S./Canada border is still closed, so unfortunately our Canadian friends are not able to visit at this time. This means U.S. visitors in the park are not permitted to cross the border into Waterton Lakes National Park.
Park visitors should practice good hygiene and social distancing. Face coverings are recommended where social distancing is not possible. |
